Salmon is the symbol of Abundance and Prosperity, Instinct, Persistence and Determination. For the Northwest Coast Nations, Salmon was a vitally important food source and both the subject of and inspiration for many of those peoples’ artistic endeavors. Taku Red is Edzerza’s artistic rendition of an event which Edzerza witnessed as a child and which had left a great impression on him. Each year in the far Northwest of British Columbia, the magnificent Taku river was so thick with migrating salmon that the waters of the river ran red. The salmon would be caught as they swam upriver to spawn. The Taku River is a river runs from Northern British Columbia to the coast of Alaska at Juneau. After the Fraser and Skeena Rivers, the Taku is the largest salmon-producing river in Canada. All of the fives types of Pacific salmon can be found in these waters. Part of the Taku River valley is inhabited by the Tlingit nation, a tribe closely related to the Talhtan people.

This drum is hand painted with the image of Cheona Alpha.

By Alano Edzerza, Tahltan. This piece is inspired by Rodin's Thinker. Only the mind here is Raven's - a mischievous and selfish creature who nonetheless inadvertently benefits all humankind. This ambiguous design portrays Raven deviousness but also the complexity of his thoughts.
